Skillful female artisans are the hands behind our wonderful Shigra Tote Bag collection.
Most of these women live in isolated areas, in small communities across the Ecuadorian Andean region. They are mostly mothers, who have to walk long distances to reach inhabited areas and trade the grains they grow and the milk from their animals.
The wage that they get for their Shigra Tote weaving is a welcome extra income that help support their families. However, their main source of sustenance remains farming or livestock rearing because the handweaving of Shigra Bags is very time-consuming.
Nonetheless, they continue to teach their daughters the shigra weaving art that they have learned from their mothers and their mothers from their grandmothers. It is important to them to continue this legacy, not only for the sake of tradition, but also because what they earn with their weaving skills has a positive impact in their lives and in their children´s lives.
